Is there a reason that the descriptions refer to the race of characters so often (unless they are white)? It’s really grating that the first word used to describe someone is the colour of their skin unless they are white skinned. It’s like there’s a diversity checklist that needs to be ticked off for a book to make this list.

Rather than focusing on the quality of the book, the list seems to be about checking off as many diversity points as possible.

wow, these picks are a real mixed bag! i’m definitely gonna check out a few of these, but also surprised to see some of my favorites missing. can’t please everyone, i guess!

So three of the Booker prize shortlisted books are listed - The Bee Sting, This Other Eden and Western Lane. The currently favourite - A Study in Obedience, isn’t.

Holly is an odd choice tbh.

Also glad that the NYT has discovered cozyfic, with the addition of Emily Wides Encylioaedia of Fairies .

All in all … an eclectic and somewhat random collection tbh. .

I’ve read 179 books so far this year and The Deluge is a top 10 for me. Glad to see it on this list.

Y/N was a jarring read, truly one of the more bizarre stories I finished this year. Am glad to see it included here though
