Ya thats what I figure. He is staying there because his mom is supposed to “move out”.
And its probably an awkward conversation if he would move. Like mom I am moving to a 2 bedroom you gonna pay rent?
He seems like the type of guy that wouldn’t want to have that talk. He said hiimself he basically hides in his room and has 1 friend he never meet in person. He probably is just staying at his 1 bedroom apartment to avoid having to talk to his mom and set some ground rules about her moving out/paying rent/doing chores etc…
