I have two. The Ritual and Drowning.
The Ritual is pure smut. 61 chapters and every one contains a graphic, demeaning sex scene. I’m convinced the author was an adult film screenwriter and decided to try their hand at writing a novel. There isn’t a single likable character in this book.
Drowning isn’t a great work of literature. I felt that the characters were very two-dimensional. I hated how naive the author made the protagonist. It made me have a lack of sympathy for her. The ending was series finale of Dexter bad.
The midnight library. Recommended to me by a family member for ages so said I’d give it a go. Subtle as a brick. First book in a long time I couldn’t finish. It was basically “grass is always greener” the book
Matt Haig is honestly a terrible writer. I dont understand the hype around him at all. This isn’t the first book of his I tried and I couldn’t finish any of them.
i’m not really sure how to phrase this but i remember reading this and disliking how very specific all the other “lives” were. i thought it was going to be more along the lines of like “what if i had gone to a different store that day?” “what if i had been an hour late?”, more like a butterfly effect type of story. disappointing
This is disappointing to hear, because I heard about the book and thought it was a fascinating premise. I bought it earlier this year, but haven’t gotten to reading it yet. Is it really that bad?
Yes. Honestly kind of masturbatory. You know those cheap inspirational self help books they have at drugstores and supermarkets? It’s one of those pretending to be a novel.
That’s the best description of the book I’ve ever heard. And I wholeheartedly agree! Total trash
Man, that stinks to hear. Being inspired to see new possibilities in a life you thought you were done with sounds like a concept that could really help people, and be interesting to explore. But if done the wrong way, I know topics like that can come across as heavy-handed and even verging on insulting to those with mental health struggles.
I guess I will still try to read the book since I already bought it, but now I am feeling significantly less enthused…
i loved this book just because i love multiple timelines stuff but i understand why people didn’t like it, especially the ending. it was pretty cheesy and seemed kind of tone deaf when it comes to mental health
Same. I loved this book because of the idea of a library that can make you live in multiple timelines. Like I want one.
