I have two. The Ritual and Drowning.

The Ritual is pure smut. 61 chapters and every one contains a graphic, demeaning sex scene. I’m convinced the author was an adult film screenwriter and decided to try their hand at writing a novel. There isn’t a single likable character in this book.

Drowning isn’t a great work of literature. I felt that the characters were very two-dimensional. I hated how naive the author made the protagonist. It made me have a lack of sympathy for her. The ending was series finale of Dexter bad.

The worst book I read this year was Jonathan Cahn’s Return of the Gods. I found a copy in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport left abandoned where I was sitting in my gate and when no one returned to claim it, decided to take it and read it so it wouldn’t just get trashed later. Boy oh boy do I wish I’d left it.

If anyone is interested, I left a more full review on my Storygraph

But in broad strokes, it’s a nonfiction book that lays the blame of all the problems of the world at the feet of women, LGBTQ+, and the presence of literal ancient Gods turning people away from Christianity through feminism, progressivism, and acceptance of out groups. It was a wild experience.

As for regular books, my roughest of the year are The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections by Eva Jurczyk, Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam, and a sample of Lightlark that my wife and I enjoyed laughing at.
