In the most recent episode Debbie comes across some carved wooden ducks wrapped up together on a shelf shortly before she has a breakdown. They’re not on screen for long and not much attention is called to them but it’s pretty clear to me what they are.
When Koreans get married they often get wooden ducks. They symbolize fidelity/prosperity/fertility of the newlyweds and are something any Korean would instantly recognize. The symbolism of them being wrapped up together should be obvious.
I think you can imagine the emotional punch that would pack for Debbie when she’s already on edge as they’re a very very direct reminder of her marriage.
They were a good touch to add to the episode and I’m happy that they didn’t beat the viewer over the head with the symbolism. There has been just little bits and pieces of Korean culture in S1, but this is the most meaningful bit so far.
wow - good on you for catching this! and it’s awesome the show is putting in cultural touches like this.
Those goddamn ducks…
