Is there any reason why Viltrumites have to assimilate the dominant species on any planet? Wouldn't it be easier to go for the second most intelligent ones, like dolphins or chimpanzees?

When you consider that Nolan wasn’t sure if Mark would develop powers possibly all bipeds have had a higher chance of assimilating and although it’s likely it’s not certain.
