This is the most press The Daily Show has gotten since the Jon Stewart days. Having new hosts every week possibly brings in new audiences. It’s basically SNL now.

The UK’s biggest topical comedy show is Have I got news for you. After the original host was in the papers for a coke & women scandal, they went for guest hosts and haven’t looked back. You get some duds, but it keeps people tuning in, and you always look forward to your favourite hosts coming back.

The best thing about that coke scandal was the fact the host presented the same week that it broke. I remember Merton wearing a T-shirt with the front page of the news of the world under his shirt that said “TVs Deaytons drugs romp with vice girls” as the headline. They fucking mauled him that episode and the fact he did that episode knowing that was bound to happen was fantastic lol

Seems pretty stupid and non progressive to run someone off for doing recreational drugs and having sex with women

Wow this famous guy on television bangs woman and does coke ???

It was 20 years ago now but he was a public figure breaking the law so it was never gonna end well. If it was weed he’d probably have gotten away with it but coke is a class A. Theoretically possession is 5 years in prison I think.

I do recall at the time the general public was pretty forgiving but the BBC is publicly funded, the optics of keeping someone on who is doing coke and shagging hookers aren’t great for that.

Reminds me of the Eight Out of 10 Cats episode after Jimmy Carr’s tax avoidance scandal.

Only if Comedy Central can get more higher profile names they can promote for ratings, but they may do it regardless because they’re probably going to get shit no matter who they select as the host so might as well wait as long as possible to make the decision.

Yes absolutely, It gives you some publicity about who is hosting, you can get bigger celebrities since it’s just a short-term gig. (I don’t think Sarah Silverman would want that as a full-time job.) Even though the writers and correspondence are the same it keeps the show from getting stale.

There’s no advantage to using the guest hosts. They’re just waiting for the right fit.

Leslie hit the jackpot this week with all the eye catching headlines in the news. An almost brawl in the senate, Bernie as referee, the McCarthy elbow, MGT and 🥎🎱⚾️🏀 and we still have Santos!🤌🏼

The thing that made Stewart a great host for so long was that he cared. In the media landscape of the past 25 years sometimes he felt like the only voice that actually gave a shit how events were impacting people’s lives.

That he could mix it up with cutting comedy was great too, but nothing compared to when he gave that heartfelt monologue on the first TDS after 9/11.

Honestly in todays age and times I appreciate the silliness and absurdism that Desi, Jordan and Michael Kosta bring.

I feel like Roy Woods REALLY wants the job, but they don’t want to give it to him. So they are just doing the rotating thing for a long while until he gets the hint and gives up.

Do they really need a permanent host? Like, really? While I haven’t been partial to any of the guest hosts so far (with the exception of Hasan Minhaj), I love all of the correspondents virtually equally - can’t they just have them rotate every week or month? I would hate to see any of them leave because they didn’t get the job, and each have their strengths.

The lack of leadership honestly reminds me of the power vacuum within the republican party.

Just a gaggle of personalities; some which no one had heard of before fighting for the lead.

How has it come to this? There are so many amazing comedians out there that given the chance would do just as well as Stuart but we keep getting the same sad ass rotation of known knowns.
