My girlfriend loves Pride and Prejudice and has talked about how she want a nice hard cover copy. I want to get her one for Christmas but there are a ton of different editions. I’m not an avid reader but have my own collectible things and I know when it comes to that for me I want everything original etc etc. From a readers stand point would you rather have a vintage edition that’s a little more rare, a brand new copy, or something like an edition with extras (hand written letters to be specific).

I’d be a little cautious, it’s less an issue when you’re buying hardcover but, because it’s out of copyright, there’s all kinds of people printing garbage versions– it’s sort of buyer beware these days for older books. If you’re going to get something new, make sure it’s from a good publisher.

Is there any way you can casually drop it into conversation, like ‘I love my vintage copy of X but so-and-so only likes new books, what do you think?’ It’s hard to guess right!
