When Nate picks up his order, Deryck says Nate’s money is no good there, “except for booze”. Why does booze make the exception?

I’m 24, lol. I just don’t like the taste of liquor in general so I’ve never ordered it at a restaurant. So if this is basic knowledge, I wouldn’t know. 😆

I always thought it was because you can take food and just declare it a loss in terms of expenses. Food gets prepared wrong, food has any issue in presentation or the order was taken wrong and basically food gets tossed all the time. Even when I delivered pizzas if anything was wrong with an order they’d just throw the pizza in the back where the drivers would all eat it. This sort of loss isn’t hard to justify and is considered normal. Loss of bottles of wine, beer, and so on couldn’t just be rationalized the same way.

In my area, you can’t legally comp alcohol. It’s against the law. I imagine that’s why?

When Nate was working at Taste of Athens, he was giving away salty snacks to get customers to purchase more booze.

I figured it was a nod to that.

Not sure on laws in the UK/England but in some places liquor control and taxes mean that they can’t be given away as free items.

Depending on location, giving away alcohol is illegal. So to discount/comp a bill they will sometimes remove food items.

restaurants rely heavily on alcohol sales for their profit margins, so deryck was likely just being friendly while still ensuring they make money. it’s a common practice in the industry.

I know in some parts of the US, you can’t give away free alcohol or you’ll lose your liquor license.

totally get it, restaurants make bank on booze sales. deryck’s just being cool to nate but not too cool. makes sense for the character. plus, booze can make your bill skyrocket real quick!
