For my English lit coursework, I have to choose two novels with similar themes which I must then write a literary critique and comparison on. I really want to do trainspotting by Irvine Welsh but I can’t think of a second novel. I was thinking either the theme of addiction which of course would be the obvious choice, but I’m also considering the theme of loyalty (the tests of loyalty, to which extent it is applicable, the effects of external factors etc etc). One of the novels has to be post 2000 (which trainspotting is not) has anyone got any ideas?
The Naked Lunch would be an excellent choice
I can offer more sci-fi or fantasy recommendations, not a big fan of addiction-fiction.
Hmm, I haven’t read Trainspotting, but maybe look at Oryx and Crake (Atwood, 2003, speculative dystopian)? There is potential overlap with the themes of loyalty, friendship, and persuit of goals.
Malcom Lowry‘s Under The Volcano is a phenomenal novel about addiction, but it‘s an immensely demanding read. Pre 2000, also.
