So essentially i was curious as to what requirements you need to meet in order to claim being a new york times best seller? From my understanding in order to claim to be #1 you have been #1 for at least 1 week, but new York times keeps the top 15 in several different categories? If lets say someone was #14 on the list of the monthly audio fiction for the month of October, could they claim to be a new york best seller? Is it illegal to claim you are one if its false?

Essentially the reason i asked this is because i came across a tiktoker who claimed to be a new york times best seller in his post, a few comments called him saying this wasnt true, obviously im nosy and have nothing better to do and cant trust people so i do my own research, i go on the New York best sellers website, and from the time he created his account to the today, this man has never once appeared in any of the categories. Of course to my knowledge they only keep the top 15, maybe they have a list somewhere that goes past 15 but i couldnt find it. Now i personally dont care if this man is lying or but it just got me thinking on how the best sellers list worked and if that tiktoker could actually be in legal trouble if someone decided to really call him out on it?
