As the title suggests, I’ve had a particular quote rattling around inside my skull for ages now.

The general sentiment is that the author of widespread acclaim, somewhere prior to this century but after or during the 18th century, said that they can’t recall writing one of their most notable works.

It was a male, I believe Henry James or Thomas Wolfe, Hawthorne or the like, and he says specifically that it feels as if “the work were written by someone else entirely.” I can’t for the life of me source this quote, please help!
