A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has said he's written 1,100 pages of next book The Winds of Winter, the same amount he'd written as of December 2022, while also revealing there are eight Game of Thrones spin-off shows being worked on.
I blame the editors/publisher. When the big man is turning in longer and longer manuscripts and introducing new characters in book 5 of what was supposed to be a 3 book series, they might have thought ‘hang on let’s not get too cocky’. Let’s finish the one we’ve got and do a second series with your precious new characters. The old characters are all treading water while the entirely unnecessary new characters fart about. You put them in the follow up series George you bellend. They were too busy nursing the cash cow to realise they could have had two trilogys out of basically the same content, but finished.
When you put it like that, D&D wanting to stop introducing new characters and wanting to wrap it up makes a lot of sense. Whatever it is GRRM is setting up is clearly just way too ambitious. He’s never going to finish it.
When he’s still finishing stuff like Fire & Blood they have no reason to prod him. Like you said, he’s making them money… it just isn’t by finishing this series, and it seems like a lot of people forget that when they wonder about the publisher.
Exactly. Winds probably will come out eventually. Blood and Fire probably as well. Maybe some Dunk and Egg. That’s like tens of millions of books for them so they’re gonna do whatever they need to keep it coming

To be fair GRRM has made Random House an assload of money so it’s much better for them to not upset the golden goose.
