A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has said he's written 1,100 pages of next book The Winds of Winter, the same amount he'd written as of December 2022, while also revealing there are eight Game of Thrones spin-off shows being worked on.
Let’s be real. The guy is a 75 year-old multimillionaire. If I were him, spending hours upon hours in my office writing a book would be at the very bottom of my to do list. Below, for example, traveling around the world, eating in the best restaurants, etc. I have given up hope long ago.
You could’ve stopped at 75 years old. Mental decline and physical health decline are a legitimate thing at that age. Even if he lived long enough to finish the series, it wouldn’t be as good as the the rest of it because of the mental decline he’s either already experiencing or will be soon. The series is never being finished.
I don’t think his life comfort-level has changed that much after he had success in TV in the 80s and had some good selling novels afterwards. He’s lived in New Mexico since the 70s (excluding the TV years) and still lives there now. Sure he might have splurged here and there, but it’s not like he’s a high roller all of a sudden.
His life’s work and magnum opus is ASOIAF, and I’d bet he wants to finish this very very much. Wouldn’t you? It’s just that he’s always been a slow writer who can only write at home, and aging hasn’t helped probably, while the books have grown more complicated. I hope and still think he can finish it. And yes, his other editing/producing activities also are taking time off writing. But after the disaster that became Game of Thrones’ TV show, I find it understandable that he’s keeping a closer guard on the expansion of his universe on the screen.
If only we had portable computers that we could take around with us while we travel.
Fr tho, it’s his life. He should finish the books but ultimately he does not have to. I’m sure what happened with the end of the series was massively disheartening.
Stephen King has been filthy rich for decades and could have quit writing years ago, yet he still churns out books. Hell, he finished the Dark Tower series shortly after being injured in a bad accident. It’s about GRRM’s work ethic and lack of discipline. The show finishing the story before the books also probably took a lot of the wind out of his sails.
75 year old writer that’s been writing his whole life and wants to leave a certain legacy behind him. The problem isn’t that he isn’t writing, the problem is he’s writing everything but the damn main series. He even did the lore for Elden Ring.

Stephen King is doing it
Right, that dude just doesn’t understand art or artists.
Just send your notes to Sanderson and he will finish the two books probably in a year. Then everybody will be happy.

Pretty sure he only writes on some ancient desktop with an obscure DOS based word processing program. He has an excuse for everything lol
Why not hire some people to help write it?
He has plenty enough money and could provide as much input as he likes and actually see the books get finished before he dies.
Guide a ghost writer and heavily edit? Idk…
I honestly think most fans would be ok with this if he was honest about it and it meant the books would come out

Hire 20 ghost writers and just manage them.
He owns a railroad. My brother worked for him for a while.
I agree, it seems a lot more fun to work on your hit TV show and go to red carpet award shows and cons instead.
That’s completely fine. No one can force him to write a book. We can tell him to stop leading people on as if he’s actually gonna finish it.
