So I just finished American psycho and it’s truly the most disgusting read I have ever read now I’m the type of person that doesn’t get disgusted by Gore or anything hard-core eating her intestines did it for me I just threw up like 10 different times after reading that book because it is so disgusting and fabulous that the fact that he tried to eat And cook her like she was just some little pot roast I’m shaking while writing this because it was just so traumatizing. It was the point where at the end I just started to lose focus and not care anymore.

I think a lot of people have this reaction to American Pyscho. I also think it is exactly the type of reaction that Bret Easton Ellis was trying to push on some people.

I read that book a few years ago. Felt majorly pranked, I couldn’t believe I dredged through that for… nothing.

I’m in the middle and really struggling. He’s killed a few people (and some animals) but I’m still finding it incredibly difficult to get through. Besides the killings it’s so boring and I really hate to use that word. It’s just dragging. I’m afraid to even ask when it “picks up” because I fear the answer is that it’s the same throughout…

Please tell me if there’s a climax of some kind before I DNF 😵‍💫

Read it some time back expecting great things… but it is honestly a forgettable experience. I didn’t take anything away from it

For me it was the child death. The whole book disgusted me but after he killed the kid and his bored reaction to it I just felt numb. Finished the book and literally read nothing for 2 years it made me that disgusted. I’m happily out of my slump and actively enjoy dark fiction (just finished we need to talk about Kevin) but I can’t with this book. I don’t recommend it - I warn people away.

I prefer the book Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite for a serial killer perspective type of book. I thought the pacing was a lot better and it held my interest more.

I completely understand what you are saying, the actual content and actions of patrick are disgusting. My appreciation from this book comes from the writing, by the end of the book you hardly notice when characters start switching names mid paragraph, descriptions of someones suit will change mid party, etc. You have been sucked into the same mundane capitalistic world that bateman has and and none of the details really matter, it’s all bullshit. By the end of the book you are looking past all of these things, and you don’t care about the truth of what is actually happening, much like bateman. Say what you will about that actually making the book an entertaining read.

This is a unique situation where the movie was actually way better than the book. It had an artsy dark humorous quality that didn’t come through in the book for me anyway
