I try books of most genres but my central genre ends up being fantasy. As we know, fantasy books are often very long and parts of series… so I do get tired and like to break things up by reading easy going books (such as Cozy or Romance). There are aspects of them I enjoy but my goodness the descriptions of the protagonists can be so cringey!

  1. Why are so many of them 5’4" and why do they make a big deal about it? 5’4" is the average height of women in America (and my height), its really nothing remarkable. Yet in these books they always use 5’4" as like a point of how these women are SOO TINY compared to the BIG MEN.

  2. More on height. The men are always 6’ too. And again talk about it all all the time. That is above average in US but like also a very common height. Stop.

  3. Diet culture. I do not want to know what they are eating. I do not want to know if they think something is “worth the calories”. I do not want to know if it’s a wonder they eat such a way given their scant figure. Stop perpetuating that stuff and progress the plot.

  4. More of weight. I specifically chose a book because it said the protagonist was plus size. I wrongfully assumed it would therefore be body positive. Throughout the whole book they just kept saying how she “could stand to lose 5 lbs”. ??? So annoying.

  5. Wow another cold and sarcastic women. She’s been like this her whole life to everyone she has ever met until she accidentally spilled her life story and insecurities to the lead man with piercing eyes.

Just needed to vent about these tropes… Further related rants welcome.

I used to read a lot more romance than I do now (not primarily fantasy, but I did read some). But either way, pretty much everything you listed is why I don’t read romance as much anymore.

I read romance novels solely for the purpose of escapism, personally, and if I’m being annoyed constantly, it’s not much of an escape. There’s definitely good stuff out there I’m sure but it takes too much effort to find it. Thanks for sharing your very accurate observations!

ugh, i feel you. it’s so frustrating to see these tired tropes over and over again in cozy and romance novels. the lack of diversity in character descriptions is exhausting. thanks for venting, it’s definitely a conversation worth having.
