It took over 4 years, but I’ve finished reading the books on PBS’ Great American Read. I have to admit, I did not read or finish ever single book on this list, but I’m still so proud of myself for getting back into reading and accomplishing reading this many books.

I would highly recommend this list for those who are in a “reading rut” (like I was). It gave me the motivation to re-read some favorites (The Book Thief, Harry Potter, LoTR), finally read books that have been on my want to read list (The Martian, A Handmaid’s Tale, The Wheel of Time), and discover new genres I never would have thought I’d enjoy (like Historical Fiction)!
Thanks to this reading list, I’m back to reading regularly and I’m very excited to start discovering new books!
I’d love to discuss the list and any books on this list in the comments.
Hey, thanks for the website! I always find it difficult to find great books. I am mostly disappointed. Bestsellers, most of the time discourage me a lot! This is a really good list. Thanks!
Another Country by James Baldwin. I regret that I only get to read that book for the first time once.

I’m not American, but thought I’d go through an see how many I’ve read. I think I’ve 31-32 or these. Some I’ve never heard of before at all, though, like Mind Invaders, Looking For Alaska and some others.
Looking at the list is interesting - it seems to mean books loved by Americans rather than works specifically by US authors. I didn’t know if it was going to be a list of the best American reads.
I remember there was a lot of frustration when this list came out, because nobody could figure out who they had asked.

I’ve read 62 of them and a handful I started but never finished. Four I never even heard of, how popular could they be?
Not a single Cormac McCarthy novel yet Fifty Shades of Grey made the list. Disappointing to say the least.

So…you didn’t finish it then? 😆
