I’ve seen people talk about actors and artists that had a terrible time.

My own would be Anne Rice. She wrote Interview with the Vampire after her young daughter died of Leukemia. Then her husband suddenly died of a brain hemorrhage. I suspect her Christian, anti-fanfic phase was a result of mental illness and manipulation from the publishers, although I don’t think she ever apologized.

Flannery O’Connor died at 39 from lupus, and was writing with full knowledge that her own life would likely be cut short. Such a brilliant author.

I wrote my Master Thesis on the collected works of O’Connor. She was a powerhouse of an author. I had the pleasure of teaching “A Good Man is Hard to Find” once to my seniors before it got pulled from our curriculum.

One of my students started yelling that “That can’t be all? Is that all? Omg?”

An author who didn’t leave room for heros. Love her.

Despite seeing it repeatedly I’m still shocked this is what our country has become.

“Pulled from the curriculum” oooohh no. Sorry you are being stifled at your job. I remember reading several of her stories in 10th grade and falling in love with every one. Freaking Florida man. Sending you positive vibes and thank you so much for continuing to teach. Here’s to voting our way out of Puritan dystopia to allow kids to read Flannery O’Connor.
