Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is from KC and people from Kansas speak in a Midwest accent. I don’t get it. I grew up in STL and lived in KC for 3 years. We don’t have southern accents. I’m I missing something?

Kansas City is in the state of Missouri.
Ted is from Kansas.
Ted lives in Wichita, Kansas.
People in Wichita do not sound like that, though. I’ve lived in Kansas my whole life. You will occasionally run into people with thicker accents, especially from small towns towards the Oklahoma border, but generally we sound just like Jason Sudeikis sounds normally. I found this video of someone doing that popular “accent challenge” from 2012. Thisis an accurate representation of how most Kansans sound.
I’ve also lived in Kansas my whole life and don’t find Ted’s accent to be out of place. Kansas isn’t a 100% homogenous state.
Exactly why I used words like “generally”, and “most Kansans” lol. He’s supposed to be FROM Wichita. Not a small, rural town outside of Wichita. Not from somewhere like Oklahoma originally, and then relocated to Wichita. It would be extremely unlikely for him to sound like that if he were born and raised in Wichita. In one of my other comments, I mentioned how I read during the first season that his accent was purposely exaggerated in order to make him seem more like a fish out of water in comparison to the Europeans. Jason’s natural accent is on par with how his character would truly sound, if they were going for accuracy vs huge contrast.
You seem to understand what his accent is and why it is the way it is. I don’t understand what your confusion is about. Are you just upset that it’s not 100% authentic?
No, not at all lol! Just simply pointing out that it’s PURPOSELY not authentic - it’s not supposed to sound like someone from Wichita. It’s known, it was done that way for certain reasons (to have a bigger contrast in comparison to English accents, and the theory that the original Ted Lasso character is based off of Bill Self, who is from Oklahoma).
The reason for my comments are that this whole thread is full of people who aren’t from KC or Wichita, telling people who are from KC or Wichita, that it is the way they talk when they’re saying it’s not lol. That’s all :) Go to Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka, Emporia, Hutchinson, etc, and the majority of us sound like Jason Sudeikis! Lol
Gotcha. It’s probably hard to accept that such a perfect show is not perfectly authentic.
You didn’t read what I said then - I am fully aware that it’s not authentic, because they did it on purpose. I love the show! I understand their reasoning behind the exaggerated accent.
My frustration isn’t with the show - it’s with the comment section here in this post. Because it’s filled with people telling those of us who are actually from the area that we DO sound that way, when we’re here. We know what we sound like. That’s all!
Interesting that this has over 100 downvoted and no one has bothered to tell you that there is also a Kansas City in Kansas. You are correct that there is a Kansas City in Missouri though.
The character also reps Arthur Bryant’s which is a Kansas City, Missouri institution.
Yeah, and?
I live in the MO side of the KC metro. I’ve never lived in KS. Yet, I’ve had jobs in KS, watch sports teams in KS and yes, I also eat at restaurants in KS. It’s not like we just stay to our own sides of the state line. Plenty of people in KS eat at and rep Arthur Bryant’s and plenty of people in MO eat at and rep Joe’s KC.
One of the shirts (Joe Arthur Gates Stack) he wears frequently in the show is a joke that references several of the notable BBQ restaurants in the KC area…as of right now, Joe’s only has locations in KS, Arthur Bryant’s only has locations in MO, Gates is mostly in MO, but has one location just over the line in Leawood, KS and Jack Stack is in both states.
Arthur Bryant’s DID once have a KS location inside the Kansas Speedway, but it closed several years ago.
Oh, and to answer OP’s question too…once you get outside of the city, suburban/rural folks in the greater KC area (and other non-city parts of both KS and MO) do have “country” accents like Ted.
Yeah and? You Ted Lasso hardons have zero chill and need hit the Ole out of doors. Lol
So it’s ok for you to freak out over which side of a city Ted lives in, but it’s not ok for people to correct you?
There’s Kcmo and KCK…………
Is there an Aurthur Bryant’s in KcK?
I live and work in Kansas City, Kansas.
He is obviously not repping Kansas City, Kansas when he is says “Barbecue sauce”, I can assure you of that.
Lol. It is. It’s also in Kansas. My family is from Kansas.
Is Arthur Bryant’s a Kansas City, Kansas Institution?
I don’t know what Arthur Bryant is. I know Ted is from Kansas. Wichita specifically if I recall. Why are you arguing this so much? Lol.
Arthur Bryant’s is a restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri for which the character Ted Lasso has a deep affection for. The character is demonstrated to have cultural roots in Kansas City, Missouri. The fact that your from Kansas and that you have no understanding to these references is a pretty good indication that you do not have such roots as part of your upbringing.
I not once said I’m from Kansas. I said I have a bunch of family from Kansas. Ted is from Kansas the state. That is known. Lol. Anyway. This is pointless because at this point I don’t even think you know what you’re arguing about. Have a nice day.
