Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is from KC and people from Kansas speak in a Midwest accent. I don’t get it. I grew up in STL and lived in KC for 3 years. We don’t have southern accents. I’m I missing something?

I answered a little bit in a threaded comment above, but I will expound here.
Ted’s accent is 100% a rural Midwestern accent. I grew up in a town of 500 people about 45 minutes from downtown KC. That accent is the accent all of my neighbors had, and that I still somewhat have myself.
My Dad’s family is from Central/East Texas. Their accent is definitely Southern and sounds nothing like Ted’s. Both are very rural, country accents, but are very different otherwise. I imagine to a non-American ear, or even a West Coast or East Coast ear, they probably sound similar, just like I can’t differentiate between a New Zealand accent and a South African accent unless I’m listening to them back to back and very carefully.
