When you finish a book are you one to write a review about said book or do you rate it and move on? Do you read reviews before starting a book or just jump right in? Has a review ever made you read or not read a book?
I typically just rate and move on. Occasionally I will write a review, but normally, only if I really enjoyed the book.
I do read reviews occasionally and would like to start reviewing more, but I would like to get better in creating more captivating reviews. I typically only read the reviews after I’ve finished a book, not sure why, but it’s what I do.
Thoughts?
Just rate it and move on. If I want to talk about it more in depth I’ll do it with a friend or maybe find a discussion thread. Most places where reviews are posted are very one sided. I’m less interested in someone reading my thoughts on a book than the opportunity to talk with people about it.
I don’t do either. But I do think it’d be a better way to get it off my chest rather than what I do now, go on reddit.
Unless I really love the book I don’t write a review. I usually rate and move on. I’ve also come to realise that just because people rate a book really high especially after it’s gone viral on bookstagram, doesn’t mean I’m going to like it. I’ve read books with average ratings or even those that are not that highly rated to be really good. So I don’t judge a book by its ratings ig
Neither. I don’t find much value in reviews from anonymous strangers, and even less from contextless star ratings. As such, I don’t feel a necessity to contribute that kind of information to any particular site. I have considered making a book blog as a personal exercise, but I have never really summoned the effort to get it going.
I usually just rate and move on, but I did just leave a review for a book that I forced myself to finish which really wasn’t great so others know what they’re getting themselves into
I often think of reviews in my head but I forget to write them down anywhere so I’ve started a book journal! Even if it’s just a sentence it’s really nice to look back on and remember what I thought about the book.
I usually to wait until the end of a book to read reviews but sometimes I have such strong feelings about a plot point or character and I absolutely have to see what others think.
Rating is the hardest part. I just cant rate. I only can say it in words not numbers haha. I’d rather say the book is good or recommended or very good than say it 3,5/5 or 4/5 lolll. And not all books I read I made the review, depends on my spare time😅.
Yes I sometimes read books based on recommendation from friends or from bookish fellas on Instagram or Twitter😉
Both now, that way I can look back and see my comments years after I read it & help refresh my memory.
Just a star rating (if you’re listening Goodreads Gods, please make it so you can give half stars!), then recommend any I really like. I try not to let other reviews impact whether I’ll give a book a try. Lots of incredible books don’t get the attention they deserve, so I make an effort to seek out books that don’t have many reviews, are newly released, indie published, etc.
OMG, I would love to give half stars on Goodreads.
Do you find yourself rounding up when it’s a half star? Like 3.5 to 4? Or just leave as is?
I just try to ignore my instinct to give halfs and round up. I’m also guilty of just marking ‘read’ if it’s not at least 3 stars🫣 that old adage, “if you don’t have anything nice to say…”
I still mark it as read and give a rating even if it’s below 3. I just don’t comment on why. I still read it…
I review it. If I don’t, I will absolutely forget everything about it.
Nowadays about a quarter of the books I read are ARCs, so I usually review those to try to maintain a decent NetGalley ratio.
With non-ARCs, sometimes I have something to say and sometimes I don’t. Often I’ll write a very brief review for non-ARCs (my ARC reviews are on the longer side).
When I read reviews, I’m much more interested in why they liked or disliked the book than in whether they liked or disliked the book. If all I know is that they liked it, so what? They’re a stranger on the internet, I have no idea if their tastes are similar to mine. But if I read a review that says “I didn’t like this, it was too weird, and the prose was too purple, and it spent too much time on the characters’ feelings and not enough time on the plot,” then I can conclude that it’s my kind of book and I should give it a try.
Maybe I am out of the loop?? What is an ARC??
Neither. If I liked it, I’ll usually just gift it to someone.
