I’ve been following Ashley and Manuel’s journey on the show, and I can’t shake off the concerns I have. Manuel’s secretive nature and reluctance to share much about his personal life, coupled with his expectation for Ashley to financially support his family, have me seriously worried. Manuel’s habit of frequently running off on Ashley is sending up some major red flags. It’s got me thinking that Ashley might be better off cutting her losses sooner rather than later.

Now, I don’t think he’s great at communicating, and that could be a cultural thing, or how he was raised, we don’t know. I can’t attest for Ecuador but I can tell you in some Hispanic cultures, the man is the man. He works, pays the bills, and makes the rules, and everyone in the household respects him and does what he says. The woman’s place is at home, cooking and cleaning, and taking care of her man. Now I’m not saying this is a right or wrong way to do things, but it could be a reason he is the way he is. He CAN’T work right now, so he has to depend on her. Her nagging and constantly talking down on him can’t make him feel that great. He left everything behind and he just wants to be in contact with his family (which is typically also huge in historic culture) but she yelled at him for his family calling too much on her phone, after she told him he’d have to use her phone since his didn’t come in yet. She needs to make up her mind. IMO, coming from a DV relationship, Ashley is abusive. Yelling at him, belittling him, controlling him. Last week when they had that chat at the restaurant, the way she looked at him and spoke through her teeth at him gave me chills, because that’s exactly what my ex did to me. Abuse isn’t always physical. It can be emotional, mental, etc. She also seems like now that she’s got him here she’s trying to isolate him from his family, and wants to “supervise” communication with them, which is also a form of abuse. I hope he goes back to his family and escapes her before it gets worse, honestly.
