I remember the 2009 episode that they tried to legally change the word fag to mean obnoxious harley drivers. But I think they don’t they really use it much anymore. I don’t really remember it stopping so did it just fade, am I mistaken or did they get censored some how? I recently started watching from the beginning and they use it way more.

One of my favorite lines from the series is when their news show gets canceled. The guy is like “you boys should be proud of what you’ve done it’s just….it’s kinda gay.” Lol

They also used Uber for a while, long rubbing comedies must be a goldmine for people studying the evolution of slang.

I’m frankly upset we can’t say gay or f*g anymore. When I was growing up in the 90s in New York we used this shit all the time, and neither word had anything to do with gay people.

Gay meant lame. But not because homosexuality was bad. It was used among people I knew more like, if someone used the word “gay” to describe being happy, like if you were an outdated out of touch ned Flanders like person that’s super nice, your gay. It just meant lame shit but not directed at gays.

F*g was used literally like how South park explained. It had nothing to do with being gay, it was used against people who are ruining everyone’s good time or who are loud and whiny and annoying.

I’m willing to say gay and f*g are obviously also used as hate speech and it’s horrible, but people can’t deny there used to be dual meaning to these words and you can’t judge a bunch of people for using them assuming their intent.

Language is complex, and I love gay people, but I really miss using those words for other stuff and it’s very hard for me to be careful not to say them. I go out of my way to make sure I don’t accidentally say it which is difficult when you grew up saying it all the time.

I wish people would stop hating on the lgbtq community, but I also wish I could catch a break sometimes if a word slips out accidentally, and not be immediately shamed and blamed and labeled a bigot.

It fell out of fashion with a few things:

    1. Legalization of gay marriage - they pay attention to politics and probably also know the increased violence against gay and trans people since then

    2. More pushback on the f-slur itself, as early as The Office US’s third season in 2006

    3. Comedies like The Hangover trilogy getting called out for using “the joke is being gay is sick and disgusting” rather than using “gay as synonymous with bad taste”

    4. More sympathy for perspectives outside of themselves - The Hobbit is a good example. They would never make the crab people episode today

    5. Considered dead/old hat when Family Guy stopped making those jokes in their Trump parody episode, so SP was likely done with it for way longer.

I’m not a fan of South Park’s boomer humor the last few seasons and especially Tegridy, but I do think they were using it as a colloquialism rather than a slur. Kendrick Lamar said the word a lot in Auntie Diaries as a way to apologize for it, and that came out in 2022.

Calling things gay is honestly such a stale joke.

TL;DR things change, and it’s a cultural shift in American language more than any lightened homophobia in the world
