Do you honestly think that a writer like McCarthy is throwing it in “just because he could”?
The word is there because that’s how his characters think and speak, and the prose is often a reflection of the character the prose is focusing on.
It’s there for a reason. Depiction is not endorsement.
Because there’s already too many books written by humans for people to read, there is no marketable reason why a person would turn to something written by a computer among an overwhelming sea of options that already exists.
Amazon is swamped by AI content and no one is buying it. It’s just more noise.
I’ve never wondered it because I don’t find physical books more exhausting.
My suggestion is that you need to reframe the way you approach art.
