10 months agoI wonder if Grace Livingston Hill would be categorized like that? Same basic plot, over and over, same type of characters (upstanding young man, sweet wallflower girl, villain is usually a fast girl who wears lipstick and has a bob or a man who encourages the girl to drink). I have a whole shelf full of them and still reread them for the nostalgia.
Julie vs. Julia. Awful book protagonist and the movie made her likeable. Also, Meryl Streep.
The Martian. I read books for the plot, setting, and characters. You set a book on Mars, and there wasn’t one description of the landscape? Zero character development, and with the diary format, zero suspense. Also, tons of math.
With both, I watched the movie first, which almost never happens, so that may have something to do with it.
