Gonna go with Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling) by Nalini Singh. Protagonist is a woman who is supposed to be (because of her species) entirely rational. It turns out she does have feelings, what she lacks is personality and self-respect. Then an “alpha male” of the shapeshifter species breaks the wall around her heart by behaving like a 14 year old. The most heartwarming thing he does in the book is not being a dick to an actual child. He also coerces here into a mating ritual if I remember correctly. Both characters are supposed to be adults in their mid twenties, not bumbling teenagers. Apart from the “romance”, the actual plot could have been solved by page 10.
Turns out the series is like 40 books and counting. I can only imagine the horrors that await those who get past the first one.
