I personally had quite a huge inner fight regarding this topic. But I realised the following and it calmed my mind ever since: I’m a very non-materialistic person in general, I only spend money on things I really need. The only exception are books. Keep in mind, I almost exclusively buy second-hand with the exception of volumes that are so new, that they’re not available otherwise, but new.
That being said, I’ve spent a considerable amount of money on books lately, and I don’t plan on stopping anytime in the near future. My reasoning being, I love the hunt, I love buying them, I love being around a lot of books in my home, and besides this, I rarely treat myself. So why not? I do read regulalry, but there is no way, I will read ALL of these books ever. So? They still make me happy on a regular basis.
I would argue that getting books constantly, and at the same time, never reading at all, seems a little bit pointless to me, but to each their own, but simply getting books and building a personal library, while reading in a slower pace, is totally fine and healthy imo. Also, I wouldn’t really call it consumerism, it’s not like you buy a pile of books and in a few weeks, you get rid of them… No, they stay with you, you look at them, they fill your home with warmth, and the feeling of knowledge and adventure.
I think I might order some later today!
Ten Cent Day??? Sounds like heaven, wish we had it here in Europe too.
