Not reading novels have reduced our ability to read novels. Reading is a skill and just like any skill it needs practice.

When I was in school smartphones and social media weren’t really a thing yet and people didn’t read anyway. They went and did whatever they wanted and rarely that was reading.

I don’t believe for a second that if social media and phones suddenly disappeared people would start reading more.
