The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz. Not so well known these days, unfortunately, except in Egypt where they love him. He won the Nobel Prize in 88, and I can’t recommend him enough, especially The Cairo Trilogy, which starts with the book Palace Walk.
