I just started reading East of Eden and wow!! It really encapsulates the human condition really well.

This isn’t actually answering the question but I have to say that a lot of classics are wasted on high schoolers. I wasn’t mentally developed or mature enough to enjoy a lot of them. I think you need some life experience in order to understand and relate to the classics.

The Circle by Dave Eggers was so bad!! It seemed to have potential at first but then went spiraling down throughout the book. The main character was the worst.
