Agreed. It somehow drew up 2 stars in my estimation, but it definitely disappointed hard for such a hyped book. (I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised, since most hyped things are junk.) I did enjoy the footnotes and the moments that are love letters to language and translation, but the book was embarrassingly littered with errors and it bludgeoned the reader over the head with the political themes.

It’s rare to hear criticisms of this one. I haven’t read it yet.

Algernon is such a gem of a book.

I finally read this one this year too! I breezed through it and had such an enjoyable time, definitely one of my few top reads for the year. That said, I got sidetracked and need to finish the series.

Same, I read it last year, a few months after the war in Ukraine began, and it was a mind blowing read for me. He really sucks you into their inner psyches. I need to read more from him.

I’ve got both on my list… I have a background in classics so I wanted to give Cloud Cuckoo Land a shot first. It seems right up my alley, though I’m wary of books that get a lot of hype.

I just finished The Haunting of Hill House. I should’ve read it years ago, it’s fantastic. Don’t read anything about it if you don’t already know … beyond the fact that it is chilling in a way that most horror books are not.
