I book club’d this with my wife. I couldn’t stand the characters, or keep my eyes from rolling every time a character tried to lore dump for ‘world building’.
Also (minor spoiler) the explicit sex scenes felt wayyy out of place - because the book reads like a YA fantasy (complete with immature protag) and the all of a sudden it’s smut city. So weird man.
The preface to ‘This Side of Paradise’ by F Scott Fitzgerald stated that he originally submitted his manuscript with typos and grammatical errors, as well as incorrect cultural references, all with the assumption that the editor would take care of all that… but apparently not, they left a lot of it in.
So over the years F. Scott submitted revisions for the book, and I think the version you can buy today is different than the one sold back in the 20s.
It’s a by the numbers Harry-Divergent-Games-Giver clone…except with half the writing skill and next to zero charm. NONE of the characters were fleshed out (or relatable) and the protagonist was insufferable. It’s an overhyped TikTok cow patty of a book.
