The most disturbing thing about his whole philosophy on war is that it kinda seems like he’s right. Certainly no other character is able to articulate any kind of substantive objection.
Symbolism and high school are tricky. Some teachers don’t understand it well enough to teach it, and even when they do, students are apt to misunderstand it greatly.
Dostoevsky and “magnanimous.” (In translation.) I assume in Russian, there’s a word for the same thing that is just more frequently used than “magnanimous” is in English.
