Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman are a great pair for fantasy novels (Dragonlance and The Death Gate Cycle.)
If non-fiction is OK I’d recommend Frozen In Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition by Owen Beattie & John Ge or Ice Ghosts: The Epic Hunt for the Lost Franklin Expedition by Paul Watson.
I think it was Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams that I bought with my own money.
I remember begging my Mom to buy me all the books of the Belgariad series by David Eddings in junior high though.
