I really love Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It was a book that throughout I kept thinking, “Dang, Hardy really knows how to write women!” In my view, the decisions Tess makes and her inner thoughts throughout the book was very understandable and something I sympathize with, as a woman. She did what she could to live a dignified and hardworking life despite her circumstances, and people took advantage of her throughout. It’s amazing how she carried on despite all that disappointment and betrayal. And Angel definitely is an idiot. Would I have called out Angel on his hypocrisy? Yes, but I was raised in the 21st century. For a woman of that time, I certainly admire Tess.
