I always got the impression that Nolan really had no concept of how to make money on earth until he heard that sci-fi books were a thing, and seeing as he could probably write prose 100 times faster than any other being on the planet and never was actually interested in being creative he just wrote about real crazy shit that happened to him and fluffed it up a bit.
