The Awakening by Kate Chopin. I don’t know why they had high schoolers read this - we did not have any of the life experience necessary to process the nuance in this book. I feel like if I read it now as a forty something woman without reading it before it would be fine. But as a high schooler with a deadbeat dad the ending of the book triggered me and I felt the main character was a selfish abominable being and any attempts of the teacher at “bug feminism” made me even angrier.
