I first read them during a time I was pretty depressed and a girl and vampire love story just seemed more realistic and grounded than where my life was headed at that moment. I reread them all multiple times in a row back then. But I still pick them up from time to time now when I need an escape. I like OP’s term of safe space book. That describes Twilight perfectly for me.
