  • Do you ever struggle with separating the person of the writer from the voice in the book or particular characters?

There are times when a character is an author insert/mouthpiece and recognition and criticism of that can be valid but being unable to separate every narrator or main PoV character from the author is problematic in my opinion.

Do you ever feel differently about the writer after reading a book that has some unconventional ideas or characters you find very unlikable or behaviors that shock you?

This one depends more on the conclusions the book draws about those ideas/characters/behaviours and again that’s less being unable to separate the narrative from the author and more about me just not enjoying that authors work.

I don’t think I have an auto buy author. I was going to say Mira Grant but that’s a bit of a cop out since that’s the pen name of Seanan McGuire who I like some of the stuff she writes under her real name but not all of it. Patricia Briggs is another option but again a bit of a cop out since for the last long while she’s really only written books in the Mercyverse and I’m not 100% sure she a guarantee for me since I don’t love her old fantasy books she wrote before she started the Mercy series and subsequently the Alpha and Omega series.

There’s plenty of series that I pre-order the next book in but even an author like Jeff VanderMeer who I adore I’ll still read the early reviews that come out before I decide to buy their next book.
