Claudius the God is great too.
Alex “Joy of Sex” Comfort also wrote a similar book about Nero, which is kind of a sequel. Nowhere near as good but if you’re still wanting more after the second book it’s worth a look.
Check out “East Lynne”. Huge seller from 1861.
I’m currently reading it, just out of sheer interest.
Would not recommend.
Mary Shelley rewrote Frankenstein in 1831, making it a bit more “mass market”.
Leslie Charteris used to rewrite every Saint book before republication to make them more topical (which I guess just infuriate the collectors of his work).
It happens a lot.
Every time there was a new edition of a “Saint” book Leslie Charteris used to make changes to modernise it - change the cars, fashion, etc.
Acceptable but as a reader I’d rather he’d spent the time writing a new one instead.
