I watched the special last night, absolutely loved it. Laughed my ass off.
However, I get the feeling that maybe Matt and Trey haven’t actually seen the new Indiana Jones movie…? Because the special kept implying (and maybe even outright saying) that Dial of Destiny replaced or was trying to replace Indy with a chick in the character played by Phoebe Waller Bridges, but that wasn’t the case at all. Her character is the female sidekick of the movie, à la Willie in Temple of Doom, or more specifically Marion in Raiders. She’s not a replacement for Indy, and at no point is it implied that she will be.
This is perhaps the only time I’ve thought that maybe Trey and Matt didn’t quite have their facts straight, unless they did and it was intentional for reasons that went over my head.
I actually liked Indy 5 and thought the potshots at it were largely unwarranted, but the rest of the special was spot-on.
She does do many Indiana Jones-y things and is presented as his torch bearer. Indy is still the main protagonist, but she is the second one and has more character than any other side kick in the other movies except maybe his son in Crystal Skull.
But really, I think this discussion is missing the point that Trey and Matt tried to just call Dial of Destiny as the shot movie it was.
This isn’t the first time they’ve made fun of a movie without seeing it first. The commentary about Insheeption is hilarious.
The idea that going forward, Phoebe Waller Bridge would be taking the lead after the film has been hinted at and tossed around by quite a few people including Pheobe and Kathleen themselves.
Yes you are correct that they didn’t literally call her indie but it is clear she is supposed to be the replacement and even officials working on the franchise have made this clear.
Officially speaking, the movie was made to give indiana Jones a fitting send off. To most observers it is clear that it was actually a setup for pheobe to step in to the role as the next Indiana jones
That wasn’t the impression I personally got when watching it, but I see where coming from. I went into the movie with no knowledge of anything behind the scenes, and I’m not even sure I ever watched a trailer for it.
I actually thought the new one was at least better than Crystal Skull.
