He’s a cyber security analyst in a low cost of living city and state. Three bedroom homes can go for under $200k. He may just be a penny pincher — he seems unbothered about his living situation.

As a software engineer’s wife, I can confirm that he probably makes over 100k a year … HOWEVER, people are judging him for not having a huge house or paying for his mom to have her own … however, hear me out - there’s something up with his mom. She is a hoarder and I bet she’s been overspending and had this hoarder life style for a long time. It is also not his responsibility to support his mother. It sounded like this was a temporary living arrangement and she has 1) overstayed 2) he doesn’t wNt to kick her out. I’m sure the mom is making faces when the girl shows up because she doesn’t want to share her meal ticket. Now, about living in a larger space, why should he be house poor because he makes a decent living? This one bedroom suits him and his Guinea pigs. If he gets a larger place then it’s just going to cement in the idea that the mom can continue to mooch of her son. There’s also nothing wrong with being a penny pincher, some people don’t mind making sacrifices now so that life can be easier later.
This is what I believe to be the most accurate take. He can probably live decently but isn’t wanting to support his hoarder mother. I’m certain he loves her, he seems kind to her, but a hoarder is a hoarder and they will take until their source is dry. If he got a bigger place she would absolutely assume a room is for her. Wishing good luck to him and his lil piggies. And here hoping mom works herself out. It’s a hard mentality to escape.
I think the easiest answer is there’s bad credit between both of them which would answer all the whys here about why there is no house (his childhood home probably got foreclosed based on his mom’s habits) and why they are squeezed into a small apartment. It could be hard for him to get another lease. Money is awesome but if credit and rental history is bad for someone then it’s super difficult to recover. Remember Jorge (Anfisa) couldn’t get a lease for the longest time due to his criminal record.
His chair is $200 new, headphones $150 new, two Asus monitors plus a Dell (guessing work provided). At least he’s buying himself some nice stuff too, that stuff doesn’t look old or beat up either so I can see him staying there with his mom to save money
Especially after Anali (the fiancee ) gets there I’d like to see him have a gaming room, so the bed room can be less multi-purpose. And for Mom to somehow move out. As it is the man is living in his bedroom full-time.
