I have two. The Ritual and Drowning.
The Ritual is pure smut. 61 chapters and every one contains a graphic, demeaning sex scene. I’m convinced the author was an adult film screenwriter and decided to try their hand at writing a novel. There isn’t a single likable character in this book.
Drowning isn’t a great work of literature. I felt that the characters were very two-dimensional. I hated how naive the author made the protagonist. It made me have a lack of sympathy for her. The ending was series finale of Dexter bad.
Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney- I hated the writing style, and the twist was both obvious and at the same time didn’t match up with some earlier details.
Vox by Christina Dalcher- One of, if not THE dumbest main character I have ever read about. This book is about women’s rights being taken away to the point where they are limited to speaking 100 words a day, enforced by wrist counters. There are also so many plotholes around that premise and how it came to happen in the first place.
Daisy Darker is easily my most hated book this year. If you’ve already read And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, then this feels like a cheap, low knock-off version of it. Agatha’s version is far superior. The “twist” was bullshit, the attempts at being deep and philosophical with all the “sometimes” non-thoughts almost made me DNF the whole thing. I truly hated every minute of it. Glad to see someone else feels the same!
