I have two. The Ritual and Drowning.
The Ritual is pure smut. 61 chapters and every one contains a graphic, demeaning sex scene. I’m convinced the author was an adult film screenwriter and decided to try their hand at writing a novel. There isn’t a single likable character in this book.
Drowning isn’t a great work of literature. I felt that the characters were very two-dimensional. I hated how naive the author made the protagonist. It made me have a lack of sympathy for her. The ending was series finale of Dexter bad.
This Is How You Lose the Time War. My brother apparently bought it at an airport on a trip and gave it to me to read afterward. I get what they were going for I guess, but man was it the most unsatisfying and uninteresting book I’ve read in YEARS.
I was really disappointed with it. It felt like the authors were just trying to impress each other with more and more overdone prose and absurd scenarios. I can’t believe how long it felt for how short a book it was.
I was also unimpressed with the stereotypical FF romance… the one who likes machines and the one who likes plants and tea? Groundbreaking. Never been done before.
Like can I get some semblance of a personality beyond that for either of them? Why would they like each other at all?? Sorry, I may be a bisexual woman, but I’m not that desperate for representation.
I eventually loved the book, but I don’t think it establishes Red and Blue as enemies/rivals well enough in the beginning. I enjoy the relationship but it happens simultaneously very fast and very slow – I’m a bit of a lazy reader and generally need more story along with the prose (which I did find beautiful.)
