I follow a lot of bookstagram accounts and I had finally gathered up the courage to start my own. I love reading other people’s reviews and I love posting about books I read and non of my friends on my personal account seem that interested.

Anyways, today I saw this post about boycotting authors who support Israel or take a neutral stance. Basically this is cancel culture, but we can’t even call it so since essentially there is a genocide going on and it’s pretty shitty that anyone with influence such as big name authors would post things in favor of it publicly (privately disagreeing is one thing, but some things need to be kept to oneself)

I’m personally pro-Palestine. I believe what is going on right now is 100% genocide and inhuman, and most likely fueled by a desire to acquire natural gas reserves in the Gaza strip (a hypothesis so far unproven).

However, being pro palestine doesn’t mean I don’t absolutely LOVE Taylor Jenkins Reid, Alice Oseman, Pierce Brown to name a few.

Not buying their books is easy enough but should I not be posting/ reviewing about their books either? I love their work, and I want to say so, without everyone canceling my account into oblivion.

I’d love to hear what you guys think. I’m sure some of y’all also follow book related social media profiles. How would you feel if a content creator was pro palestine and advocated for palestine but continues to enjoy works of authors such as above? Should authors/ books be boycotted at all?

What’s your take on this?

Boycotting artists because they don’t have an opinion (neutral) is some next level shit. Good luck finding any art whatsoever to enjoy.

There’s a long history of people telling you who is OK to read and who isn’t.

With some distance (whether decades or centuries) how do you feel about those people?

Are you pro Hamas? Because they are the ones who are the elected government and leadership of Palestine. Do you agree with attacking music festivals, murdering civilians, and taking hostages? Do you support the murder of homosexuals and religious extremism? Honor killing? Are you willing to support a faction backed by Iran? Do you not think they would commit genocide if the roles were reversed?

You need to fully consider a position, especially one as complicated as the Israel Palestinian conflict before you commit to it and go around boycotting people.

The best options I see is a cease fire, a removal of Hamas from leadership of Palestine, and a removal of the aggressive leadership of Israel. But here’s the thing, that’s not going to happen, so best I can really hope for is a ceasefire.

If you close yourself off to one side of the conflict then how can you be paint an accurate picture of whats happening?

That’s ridiculous. You don’t boycott someone because the country they were born in has right-wing political leaders and citizens who are blindly patriotic. Why is any of what’s going on over there the fault of an author? Or anyone who’s just making a living for that matter? Should be also boycott authors from Palestine? Russia? Iran? Where do you draw the line?

I find social media activism laughable. So many people suddenly feel qualified to have an “opinion” on a conflict that requires a lot of research to even get close to understanding the different positions and the different interests that are at play here.

I mean, what does “pro-Palestine” even mean? I’m sure you don’t support terrorist, do you? Or Antisemites?

Thinking what’s going on is a genocide is one thing (wrong but understandable given the far right MPs in Bibi’s cabinet and their crazy statements)

Thinking that Israel wants some natural gaz is dumb as hell as anyone who knows anything about the conflict could tell you. A big portion of Israelis wants the West Bank, not Gaza. They unilaterally withdrew from Gaza after offering all of it back in 2000.

A month ago 90% of TikTok users couldn’t point to Isreal or Palastine on a map, and they sure didn’t know fuck all about the history of the conflict.

Remember kids, if your going to keep getting attention on social media you’ve got to go beyond the what everyone else is doing!!

Posting a flag, writing a slogan, thoughts and prayers just doesn’t get the attention like before. You gotta call for a boycott of writers that you never had any intention of ever reading, in fact, until pointed out to you, you had no idea they even wrote, let alone their political leanings.

Gotta get those sweet, sweet, likes!!

I hate this social media activist bullshit, with every fibre of my being: it’s vapid, fake, transitory outrage, solely to signal to others online that you’re ‘one of them’.

This time next year it’ll be ‘stand up for Koalas!’ don’t read books by Dingoes!!!

    Book (Media) boycotts are dumb.

    Virtue Signaling is dumb.

The notion that the recent problems in Israel are the result of Israeli desires for Natural Gas reserves in Gaza is so fucking dumb I marvel that someone could actually be that stupid.

If there is NG under Gaza literally nothing is stopping the Israelis from accessing it. Gaza is a “strip”, it’s not very wide…come in from the side, drill in at an angle, hook up a valve and start pumping.

This just displays massive ignorance about the Middle East and the Petrochemical extraction industry in general.

So, you think that authors should keep their opinions to themselves and not make statements that don’t agree with yours.

But you want to voice your opinion and organize a boycott.

In other words, “agree with me or shut up”? Do you even see the contradiction in your post?

today I saw this post about boycotting authors who support Israel or take a neutral stance.

I’m really sorry to say this, but anyone who thinks you should cancel people for not having an opinion on a topic is absolutely fucking mental.

I mean if people were comfortable with boycotting JK Rowling over her trans-views, I don’t see what’s radically different about boycotting pro-apartheid or pro-genocide authors.

Having said that it’s not like a boycott achieves something unless you think these same authors are literally funding Likud.

It’s cringe. There are good arguments to be pro-Israel and pro-Palestine and there is no way to know the whole life behind a particular opinion. Judge books by their quality (or the lack thereof) and not by their author.

More than a thousand civilians are murdered in cold blood by terrorists and you think the response is “most likely fueled by a desire to acquire natural gas reserves.” 🤦‍♂️

Boycott whoever you want, I don’t care.
