Clearly their relationship deteriorated once BJ started his lecturing gig and Hollyhock found out about New Mexico (nail in the coffin being the televised interviews). However I can’t help that feel that Hollyhock has some of the same character flaws as BJ, and despite his major issues , he’s still family. In that sense maybe BJ would get her in a way others wouldn’t. I kind of hope that in the long run BJ gets his shit together and they can form a healthy relationship.
She probably wouldn’t be ready for that until she’s well into her middle age years, and I’m guessing by then BJ will be six feet under, probably due to physical problems (even if he stays clean, decades of drink & drug and terrible diet can catch up), or shit, maybe unaliving himself since chronic depression isn’t a problem that just goes away either, and now he’s sober and full of guilt/shame for a whole lifetime of horrible behaviour. Even with good quality therapy and devoting himself to “restitution” in the form of volunteering, teaching, etc., that’s going to weigh on him forever.
And Hollyhock, not only is the pain of betrayal and fear of exploitation and the moral abhorrence going to be there for a very, very long time, in practical terms she must stay away if she wants to thrive professionally and socially. Any association with “that fucking guy” is going to taint her relationships, even if she’s geographically and professionally very far away from Hollywoo – the stories will circulate, the names will be familiar. She might contemplate getting rid of the white diamond on her head, not only for her internal sense of distance, but to offset any random people making that association on seeing her.
So yeah, maybe once she’s much older, once she’s secure in her position in the world, where it feels like she has less to lose, and even something to gain, she might feel ready to reach out. But realistically, by that time, it will be too late.
