What something people usually don’t know/notice about the show? What’s a lil easter egg or fun fact you may know about the show? I’m Intrigued.

The Ibsen callback in the last episode. Beatrice’s critique of Bojack’s work is often phrased as, It’s no Ibsen. I think in the free churro episode A Doll’s House is mentioned specifically but I can’t remember exactly.
Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright from the late 1800’s. A Dolls House is about a married woman ‘lacking reasonable opportunities for self fulfillment in a male dominated world’ according to Wiki. It had a pretty controversial ending with the wife leaving her husband and children.
A Dolls House is likely Ibsens most well known play, with Hedda Gabler a close second. If I remember correctly, Hedda Gabler is the play Bojack is working on with the prison theatre. So, call back to his mom’s beloved Ibsen.
Lot of play references in Bojack!! I immediately think of “How I Learned to Drive” by Paula Vogel with the Penny’s story. I think the report (Max?) asks Penny where she learned to drive in the last season.
I watched BoJack with someone who’s really big on theater. Really enhanced the viewing experience.
There’s a gag about Margot Martindale doing a Tennessee Williams play that she thought was a hilariously accurate deconstruction of TW plays.
The Ibsen motif was one of my favorite things about Beatrice’s backstory. It’s a really cool, subtle way of adding depth to her character and reinforcing the impact of her unhappiness on Bojack’s self image.
read A Doll’s House in high school. a great story that holds up to this day, with relevant themes.
I‘m sorry for even asking, but I genuinely never got the „It‘s no Ibsen“ thing, does it mean the comparison to Hendrik Ibsen?
Yes, that’s my take. Beatrice was impacted by his work and compared the stuff Bojack made to Ibsens work.
He also makes a joke in the final episode where he says “it’s no _____” about the Ibsen play. I forget the other playwright but he’s finally doing Ibsen and says that even that’s not as good as other stuff.
I picked up a book of Ibsen because this show lmao. IIRC they made that reference A LOT,
Well it’s no Ibsen
Even when he was making that movie that he thought was shitty because well, it’s not “Casablanca” is kinda an offshoot of this joke.
This actually goes even deeper, his father was haunted by how terrible of a writer he is and probably got shit from Beatrice about how is “no Ibsen”. Which Butterscotch then took out on his own son
