What something people usually don’t know/notice about the show? What’s a lil easter egg or fun fact you may know about the show? I’m Intrigued.
The Dinosaurs Baby can be seen in the scene where Toad walks to the machine which turns I’m into To-ad, the cooler, sexual assaulter version of Toad
In “Still Broken” (S2E3) Sarah Lynn has a flashback to the last time she saw Herb before he died. He asks her to get sober so she can publish his book after he dies. She agrees and he says “To life, huh? It’ll kill ya.”
Fast-forward to “That’s Too Much, Man!” (S3E11) when she starts drinking again and invites BoJack over, he says “To life, and being done with it”
sugarman’s summer home is in harper’s landing and while bojack is tripping about his life with charlotte his “daughter’s” name is also harper(: i never thought much of it but sometimes i wonder if he subconsciously imagined her with that name because he associated good memories with the summer house (iirc he said last time he was there was when he was a kid) most likely a paper coffee cup moment but i always liked to think about it that way
I love that, I definitely think it was intentional. A lot of lil details are. I also always wanted bojack to have that lifestyle before he became a shit person.
I just noticed this on my current watch through!
i hate when someone points out a really cool and obviously thought out detail, and someone replies “coffe cup”. like stop immediately dismissing all of the thought that went into this show, not everything is a coincidence.
I’ve never heard this term before and it’s tough to look up, I keep getting articles about actual coffee lol. Could someone kindly explain?
In Free Churro, Bojack says that fans ask him questions about Easter eggs in the show and it’s dumb to try to find meaning like that in every single thing. This is the quote: “Hey, um, you know that episode where the horse has to give Ethan a pep talk, after Ethan finds out his crush only asked him to the dance because her friends were having a dorkiest date contest? In all the shots of the horse, you can see a paper coffee cup on the kitchen counter, but in the shots of Ethan, the coffee cup’s missing. Was that because the show was making a statement, about the fluctuant subjectivity of memory and how even two people can experience the same moment in entirely different ways? And I didn’t have the heart to be, like, "No, man, some crew guy just left their coffee cup in the shot. ” So instead, I was, like “Yeah. ”
yeah, me too, even if it is a coincidence, it is a cool one, you know?
i just wanted to get ahead of the paper cups comments so i don’t have to feel dumb about thinking about the name the way i do(:
for reallll. It’s such a bummer when people start dogpiling and stop others from sharing the bizarre connections they make in their heads and interesting theories they come up with, and all the fun stuff the subreddit should be for.
And fwiw, I don’t think the Harper thing even is a paper cup—it would still be a neat coincidence if it was, but it makes way too much sense and is just the type of detail the writers would think to include.
it absolutely isn’t. but i saw a paper coffee cup comment to the op, and that’s what prompted my anger haha.
When PB wants to the flip the script and he says “flip it, flip it good” it’s a reference to the song “Whip it!” By Devo. My next one is really obvious but I never really see it pointed out that we as the audience already know the name of what her baby is going to be, for like 2 seasons before she does
S2E6 - Mr. Peanutbutter’s accountant says that Mr. Peanutbutter gave “kindergarteners” 50,000$, and then it flashes to Vincent Adultman 'doing a business ’
Obviously he’s just referring to how Vincent can sometimes act a little childish, especially for such an old guy like him
The “We’re American as Pho” is a personal fav of mine.
Ditto
I posted about this a couple of days ago, but the short version: BoJack references gay Hollywood star Rock Hudson the very moment before we see Herb for the first time at the comedy club.
It’s good
bojack is a horse
I love the banners that are printed and hung for various parties. The banners read exactly how someone would have called them in to the print shop. For example:
“Congratulations Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter Peanut Butter is All One Word.”
The background details of the opening credits change to reflect what’s going on in the show and even drops hints about plot lines.
Johnny 2 Cellos on YouTube has a whole video about it.
How did anyone miss the changing intro?
In the episode that Mr. Peanutbutter throws Diane her 35th birthday party, the scene where he makes Diane an americano he actually does the actions to make a latte. Apparently someone on Reddit complained about it and Raphael Bob-waksberg saw it. So in the bojack horseman show episode, PB asks for an americano with milk(or something) and Diane corrects him and says “okay. One latte”
to be fair, it would track if diane asked for something and mr pb didn’t listen and gave her something completely different. like that’s so on brand.
As a former barista, this bothers me because a latte isn’t just an americano with milk. A latte is espresso with steamed milk and a layer of foam, an americano is espresso and hot water. An americano with milk would be espresso, hot water, and milk.
This is so inconsequential but I had to say it lol.
The Ibsen callback in the last episode. Beatrice’s critique of Bojack’s work is often phrased as, It’s no Ibsen. I think in the free churro episode A Doll’s House is mentioned specifically but I can’t remember exactly.
Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright from the late 1800’s. A Dolls House is about a married woman ‘lacking reasonable opportunities for self fulfillment in a male dominated world’ according to Wiki. It had a pretty controversial ending with the wife leaving her husband and children.
A Dolls House is likely Ibsens most well known play, with Hedda Gabler a close second. If I remember correctly, Hedda Gabler is the play Bojack is working on with the prison theatre. So, call back to his mom’s beloved Ibsen.
I‘m sorry for even asking, but I genuinely never got the „It‘s no Ibsen“ thing, does it mean the comparison to Hendrik Ibsen?
Yes, that’s my take. Beatrice was impacted by his work and compared the stuff Bojack made to Ibsens work.
read A Doll’s House in high school. a great story that holds up to this day, with relevant themes.
He also makes a joke in the final episode where he says “it’s no _____” about the Ibsen play. I forget the other playwright but he’s finally doing Ibsen and says that even that’s not as good as other stuff.
Lot of play references in Bojack!! I immediately think of “How I Learned to Drive” by Paula Vogel with the Penny’s story. I think the report (Max?) asks Penny where she learned to drive in the last season.
I watched BoJack with someone who’s really big on theater. Really enhanced the viewing experience.
There’s a gag about Margot Martindale doing a Tennessee Williams play that she thought was a hilariously accurate deconstruction of TW plays.
I picked up a book of Ibsen because this show lmao. IIRC they made that reference A LOT,
Well it’s no Ibsen
Even when he was making that movie that he thought was shitty because well, it’s not “Casablanca” is kinda an offshoot of this joke.
This actually goes even deeper, his father was haunted by how terrible of a writer he is and probably got shit from Beatrice about how is “no Ibsen”. Which Butterscotch then took out on his own son
The Ibsen motif was one of my favorite things about Beatrice’s backstory. It’s a really cool, subtle way of adding depth to her character and reinforcing the impact of her unhappiness on Bojack’s self image.
I love watching the mom and daughter duo in the background. We meet them in the first episode and thru Bojack’s meandering we see the little girl grow up
IIRC doesn’t she have another child near the end of the show?
The motel curtain falling behind Sara before her death
