The back story is too perfect
The first time I watched the series I found myself excusing every single one of his poor actions. I found myself looking at him through rose colored glasses if you will. The second time I rewatched it I kinda realized he was a douche. Still have empathy for him, but finally let myself see his flaws
It takes a bit to get out of the whole “it’s a cartoon TV show and everything resets at the end of each episode” mentality. Those Homer Simpson type rules even apply to other characters like Todd and to a lesser extent Mr. Peanutbutter, but once it becomes clear that BoJack isn’t in a sitcom, his shitty behaviour and antics start to stink.
He’s the protagonist and you are conditioned across almost every story you’ve ever read/watched/heard to sympathise with the protagonist.
I think a lot of people will have had the same experience.
It’s a dark show about an addict, there’s a lot of obvious lessons in the show, like “men in showbiz will probably do this thing because the world has historically let that happen” I think you’re probably giving too much weight to the character instead of looking at the broader picture.
He’s a horrible person for most of the show, and his actions are inexcusable, but I’m always rooting for him to do better, which for me is why his relapse in season 6 is so sad.
