The first time I watched the series I found myself excusing every single one of his poor actions. I found myself looking at him through rose colored glasses if you will. The second time I rewatched it I kinda realized he was a douche. Still have empathy for him, but finally let myself see his flaws
It takes a bit to get out of the whole “it’s a cartoon TV show and everything resets at the end of each episode” mentality. Those Homer Simpson type rules even apply to other characters like Todd and to a lesser extent Mr. Peanutbutter, but once it becomes clear that BoJack isn’t in a sitcom, his shitty behaviour and antics start to stink.

He’s the protagonist and you are conditioned across almost every story you’ve ever read/watched/heard to sympathise with the protagonist.
I think a lot of people will have had the same experience.
